IOPCC Trip Report

Around Portland West to East
Sunday 13th May 2012

Another successful around Portland trip. We were lucky with the weather which was a great change for me and a real treat.
Paddlers:
Athol Petts
Jeff Hassell
Jon Halewood
Jon Massey (leader)

We set off onto a flat calm Chesil with the sun shining, just four of us which was a nice little group, some club members were busy and some were partaking in some of the WOEC paddle events of the weekend. It was a nice change for me to enjoy rounding Portland in calm conditions giving us the chance to explore the caves, caverns and rock gardens that are usually inaccessible in windy conditions.

The sunshine had brought plenty of people out, we saw groups of divers and were mindful to give their ribs plenty of room. The cliffs were decorated with lots of human spiders on both sides of the Island, as lots of climbing clubs were in full force.
We saw a big group of paddlers from WOEC practising round caves near the Bill, said hello to a few familiar faces and then left them to it .
Athol had fun with his hood up under a bit of a waterfall then we all had a quick splash. Lunch was at Church Ope cove in the lovely sunshine.
We enjoyed the last stretch feeling relaxed, the wind had only increased slightly to a gentle breeze through the Hood entrance past Portland Port through the concrete Mulberrys to Portland castle car park for 14:30...very nice!
